Diversity in Dance
In honor of Black History Month, Ballet Virginia’s brand new, professional company will be tapping into the diverse cultural roots of the Hampton Roads community by presenting Diversity in Dance, a series of dances about the struggles, soul, and spirituality of the African-American community. Choreographed by Ballet Virginia’s own Lydia Roberts Coco (former Alvin Ailey Principal Dancer).
The evening’s performance will offer a program of brand new works of historical significance on the subjects of the Harlem 6 of 1964, the soulful music of artists such as Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye, and a dance inspired by Alvin Ailey’s “Revelations,” featuring a live gospel choir.
The message of the evening is one of unification and healing. By coming together and sharing our stories we hope to bring about understanding and empathy.
