PERFORMANCES AND AUDITIONS

Each Academy year, Ballet Virginia presents “The Nutcracker” in December and a full-length story ballet in the spring. Past story ballet performances include “Sleeping Beauty,” “Alice in Wonderland,” “Cinderella,” “Snow White,” “Twelve Dancing Princesses,” and “Coppellia.”

The Academy year ends with a student showcase, “Concert Classique.” All performances are staged at the Sandler Center for the Performing Arts in Virginia Beach. Auditions for “The Nutcracker” and the spring ballet are open to all Academy students and the community.

Audition dates and times are posted in the lobby and announced on the BV website and Newsletter. Cast lists are posted in the lobby and on the website, along with rehearsal schedules.

In addition, the First Pointe Players, a training company under the artistic direction of Ms. Patrica Sorrell, performs for the community at senior homes in Norfolk and Virginia Beach each May. A final performance, the “Cupcake Concert,” is held in early June at the Hackney Theatre on the campus of Norfolk Collegiate Upper School. See the “First Point Players” section for more information.

It takes many volunteers to pull off a successful performance and create a positive environment for each dancer. Families are asked to volunteer in various capacities prior to and during each performance (e.g., wardrobe sewers, dancer check-in, dressing rooms assistants, wardrobe assistants, runners, and lobby sales). If your dancer is cast in a performance, a letter will be distributed by the Performance Coordinator detailing the rehearsal and performance schedule, performance expectations of dancers and families, other performance details such as hair and makeup, and volunteer needs. Please make every effort to assist us in continuing to bring outstanding performances to our community and enriching experiences to our dancers.
