THE NUTCRACKER and A FULL-LENGTH STORY BALLET
Through our professional productions, Ballet Virginia offers the youth of Hampton Roads a unique opportunity to perform alongside professional dancers.. Every December, Ballet Virginia presents “The Nutcracker” with live symphony accompaniment by Symphonicity. In the Spring, a classic story book ballet is presented.
These two productions are performed at The Sandler Center for the Performing Arts in Virginia Beach. Auditions for children and pre-professionals are open to all Hampton Roads youths interested in rising to the challenge of being in a professional production. All rehearsals are held outside of normal class times.
Ballet Virginia’s professional company performs various repertoire concerts throughout the season including a Fall Concert and an early Spring Concert. Select members of Ballet Virginia II, our pre-professional company, are often given the opportunity to work alongside the professionals.
BVA CONCERT CLASSIQUE
The annual student production, Concert Classique, is for all currently enrolled dancers from Beginning Ballet and up. Preparations and rehearsals for this joyous performance begin in March of each academy year and are held the last 15 minutes of each class. Concert Classique is usually held on the second Sunday in June at the Sandler Center for the Performing Arts in Virginia Beach. This final performance of the season is a day to celebrate, through dance, all the hard work and dedication put forth by our students throughout the whole year.
FIRST POINTE PLAYERS
First Pointe Players, is proud to be affiliated with Ballet Virginia. FPP is a junior training company created and directed by Ms. Patricia Sorrell. It is designed and structured to give young dancers insight into the hallmarks of dance etiquette, the many facets of a production, the commitment of a performing member, and most importantly, the opportunity for serious dancers to advance their art by sharing it with the community. Throughout the years, dancers have gone into nursing homes to brighten the lives of residents and held workshops for scouts to educate them in the art of ballet. These opportunities have allowed the dancers to earn community service hours to help meet academic requirements for most public and private schools. The training company is designed to include at least 16 rehearsals with 6 public performances over a five month period. The training begins in January of every academy year and continues into the first week of June. First Pointe Players sustains itself financially within the BV organization by raising money for costumes, props, and production costs through fundraising and generous donations.
